COSMOS provides instructors with an online way to manage engineering homework assignments, and create these assignments from homework problems taken from the textbook.

In order to view your saved and printable PDF files from COSMOS, you will need to download and install Adobe Reader.

COSMOS is organized into four tabs:

Tab 1: Table of Contents
This tab shows the table of contents for the book and lists the number of problems and solutions available for that chapter.

Chapters in the table of contents are hyperlinked to the Create New Assignment tab page. When you click a chapter from the Table of Contents, it will open the Create New Assignment tab page. In the field provided, enter the new assignment name. Below this, you can enter a footer and description for the assignment.

You can also select another book without logging out from the application from the drop – down list provided on the Table of Contents page.

Tab 2: Create New Assignment
On this screen, you can create a name for a new assignment, and add a unique footer and description.

In the field provided, enter the new assignment name. Below this, you can enter a footer and description for the assignment. Thee footer will appear on the every page of the assignment while description will appear on the first page of the assignment only. The system also automatically adds a footer to each assignment that includes your name and school. This serves as a watermark, in an effort to prevent solutions from posting content online.

Choose “Save” to save the information on this page.

Tab 3: Manage an Assignment
On this screen, you are able to choose from problems and solutions from the text; customize these problems and solutions; add your own problems and solutions; and place them in order. From this tab you can also print and save assignments to your computer.

Choose problems and solutions from your text from the “Chapter Selection” at the left of the screen. You can use the pull – down to move from chapter to chapter. There are two tabs, one for problems and one for solutions. Please note that you can add both problems and solutions separately or simultaneously. The application also allows you to add all the problems and solutions from a chapter in one go.If you select the “Problem and Solution“ check box, the problem and solution both adds simultaneously. If you click the “Add All” button then all the problems along with their solutions will add in a single click to the “Current Assignment” window.

When you choose a problem or solution by clicking on the number, the problem or solution appears in the “Preview Window” in the center of the screen. Use the + and - at the upper right to zoom in or out.

Choose “Add to assignment” and the problem will be added to your assignment. If you would like to customize the problem, choose “Edit this problem.” The problem will download from COSMOS and open in Microsoft Word. When you are editing, you are working on your computer, not the COSMOS site.

Once you finish editing, you will need to save the file as the Microsoft Word (.DOC) format only to your computer. Then, to upload the file back to COSMOS, choose “Load” under “Custom Problems” at the left of the screen.

A popup box will appear, in which you will enter a title for your custom problem or solution. Use the “Browse” button to locate the file on your computer, and then “Submit” to upload the file. The problem or solution will now appear in your “Custom Problems” list with the title that you gave it. To add this problem or solution to your assignment, click on it so that it appears in the “Preview Window,” then choose “Add to assignment.”

Problems and solutions that you have added to your assignment are listed in the “Current Assignment” box to the right of the screen. You can change the order of the problems and solutions by rolling your cursor over the problem or solution, and then clicking and holding to drag and drop the problem in order.

When you are finished adding problems and solutions to the assignment, and are satisfied with the order that they will appear, click on “Save.” This will add the assignment to your “Saved Assignments” list.

If you'd like to print the assignment, choose the “Print” button above the preview window. This will open the assignment in a new browser window, in PDF format. You can then print from this window by using the print option in your browser.

Also on this screen, there is a button for “Save as PDF.” This functions in the same way as the print button. The assignment will open in a new window, in PDF format. Instead of choosing to print from your browser, however, you can instead save the file to your computer. This allows you to print it later or attach to an email.

Tab 4: Saved Assignments
This tab lists all saved assignments. Once you create an assignment and save it, it will appear in this list. Next to the assignment, the number of problems and solutions in the assignment is listed, as well as the date it was created. There is also an option to delete the assignment by clicking on the trash can icon.

The assignment name is a link that will open the assignment in the “Manage Assignment” tab. You can sort the items on the “Saved Assignments” tab by choosing the arrows near the column headings.


Can I send assignments created in COSMOS to my colleagues, teaching assistant, or students via email?
Yes. Create an assignment and then choose to save it, from the Manage an Assignment tab. This will cause the assignment to open in a new browser window as a PDF document. You can use your browser options to save the PDF file to your computer. Then, attach to an email as needed.
